  • Flight- reach IGI airport in New Delhi, since there is no direct or connecting flight to Spiti, the nearest airport is in Bhuntar. Fly to Bhuntar which is 245kms away from Kullu, and Kullu is 237kms away from Spiti which won’t take more than 6 hours to reach.
  • Bus- go to Delhi Maharana Pratap ISBT near Kashmiri Gate, there are direct state HRTC and private buses to and from Spiti. HRTC provides with the service of two buses to Manali which take to Spiti, the route is: Kullu- Manali- Rohtang Pass- Kunzum Pass- Kaza route. Kaza is 5.5 kms away from Spiti taking not more than 10 mins to reach.These two buses run in the morning once when the route to Spiti is open during summers. There is also the Kinnaur route (Rekong Peo), for this you’ll have to take a bus to Shimla from where the state government provides bus service to Kinnaur within every hour between 5a.m. to 8p.m. During peak tourist days, the buses go upto Kaza, but not always, they may stop at Yangthang which is 1 hour away from Nako village and quite a distance from Kaza, or sometimes, they may leave you at Rekong Peo from where you can take a bus to Kaza 11 hours away. Always be sure that you issue a ticket for Kaza and confirm before that they take you exactly there. A Volvo bus, during peak tourist hours runs from Delhi to Kalpa which is 10kms above Rekong Peo. For international tourist an inner-line permit is strictly mandatory to go beyond the Apka police check post on Rekong Peo- Kaza route, this permit can also be arranged in Shimla. Bus tickets don’t cost more than INR 250 per person
  • Train Travel- there’s no direct or connecting train to Spiti. Jogindarnagar is the nearest railway station to Spiti, from Jogindarnagar you’ll have to take a bus to Manali, which is just 163 kms away; it won’t take more than 5 hours. And from Manali a bus to Kaza.
  • Self drive- if you’re driving upto Spiti by a car or a motorcycle, you’ll first have to go to Manali and follow the Rohtang Pass- Kunzum Pass route to Kaza and then to Spiti. If these roads are closed up, then you can go to Shimla and drive to Kinnaur ( Rekong Peo) and move forward to Kaza which will take you to Spiti in no less than 10mins. If this route is also closed up, then there’s no choice other than to delay your plans as reaching Spiti is quite dangerous especially in winters and monsoon.

9. Tabo and Kaza, Himachal Pradesh

Tabo lays 48kms from Kaza; this prehistoric village houses the most prominent monastery next to the Tholing Gompa in Tibet. Kaza is the sub divisional headquarters of the Spiti and Lahaul district, just like the cold deserts Ladakh and Tibet, Kaza has close similarities with them in terms of climate, terrain and the Buddhist culture. Kaza is a beautiful panoramic cold town overlooking mountain ridges with beautiful scenes of sunrise and sunset, and is divided into the old Kaza Khas and the new Kaza Soma sections.

  • Flight- regular flights can be booked from IGI Delhi to Bhuntar Airport or Shimla Airport. While from Bhuntar Airport it takes 6 hrs 20 mins via Leh Manali highway or NH505 which is 252.3kms, it takes 11hrs and 31 mins from Shimla Airport to reach Kaza a distance of 457.3kms via NH505.
  • Bus- from ISBT Kashmiri Gate Delhi, state or private buses are available upto Shimla. The buses from Shimla will take you to Kaza via Kinnaur a distance of more than 412 kms.
  • Car Drive- to reach Kaza, you’ll first have to drive to Manali. Drive from Delhi to Murthal. Once in Murthal, drive straight to Karnal and then to Ambala. Once in Ambala rest for a day and then head off to Ludhiana, take NH1 from Ludhiana and drive straight to Ropar and then Anandpur Sahib. Take right to Swarghat then Bilaspur and Sundernagar. 19. Solang, Himachal Pradesh

This valley lies between Solang Village and Beas Kund, 13kms away from Manali. It offers a panoramic view of glaciers and mountains clad in snow. Snow lovers would love to visit from the months of December to February.

Major Attractions: during winters it’s a skiing haven, you can also attend the ABVIM’s winter skiing festivals. During summer, Parachuting, Zorbing, horse riding and Para gliding take place of skiing.

How to reach:

  • Train- reach the New Delhi railway station and catch a train to Jogindernagar. Once in Jogindernagar, hop on to a bus or book a taxi to Manali which is just 163 kms away, it won’t take more than 5 hours. From Manali it’s a distance of 13kms to Solang through Leh-Manali highway.
  • Flight – Once in IGI catch a plane to Bhuntar. Flying cuts off a lot of travel time, providing with more to enjoy. Once in Bhuntar take a cab or ask the hotel in Manali to arrange for a ride. Bhuntar is 48 kms away from Manali which won’t take more than 2 hours. From Manali it’s a distance of 13kms to Solang through Leh-Manali highway.
  • Bus- a lot of Himachal Road Transportation buses go to Manali, it will be better if you opt for a private bus service. Reach ISBT Kashmiri gate in Delhi, and hop on to a bus to Manali which goes early in the morning or late in the night. For better private bus services you can check online for Volvo buses. From Manali it’s a distance of 13kms to Solang through Leh-Manali highway.
  • Car drive- Drive from Delhi to Murthal. Once in Murthal, drive straight to Karnal and then to Ambala. Once in Ambala rest for a day and then head off to Ludhiana, take NH1 from Ludhiana and drive straight to Ropar and then Anandpur Sahib. Take right to Swarghat then Bilaspur and Sundernagar. Reach Mandi after that and drive to Bhuntar which will lead you to Kullu Bypass and finally Manali. This drive is of 538 kms which won’t take less than 11 hours. From Manali it’s a distance of 13kms to Solang through Leh-Manali highway.

20. Malana

Situated near Kullu Valley, Malana is a beautiful digital detox also called the Greece of India. It provides with the breathtaking views of the Deo Tiba and Chanderkhani crests. The best time to visit is in August.

Major Attractions: trekking through the alpine pastures and forests with spellbinding views, visit the Chanderkhani pass and be ensnared by the mesmerizing beauty of Kheer Ganga and the panorama the snow laden Himalayas show.   • Bus- both state run and private buses are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Bhuntar, then buses from Bhuntar to Kasol are available which won’t take more than 1 hr 14mins via Manikaran Road a distance of 31.3 kms. Get down at Jari on the way, Malana is 23kms away from Jari.

Why to visit this place: it’s a paradise for trekkers, hikers and most of all photographers.

21. Palampur

Palampur: amidst the towering Pine and Deodar forests and tea gardens with umpteen streams pouring through, Palampur is the mesmerizing blend of cascading water and greenery. It’s nestled between the holy laps of the mighty Dhauladhar ranges; its tea plantations are famous worldwide for their finest quality. It has various mansions and cottages and governmental offices in Victorian styles amongst the picturesque landscape.

Major Attractions: Negul khad is best for rafting or any other water sport, Tashi Jong monastery and the tea gardens are also too welcoming.

  • Train- catch a train from Delhi to Pathankot, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Palampur which is a 7hr distance of 112kms.

22. Rohtang La

Rohtang other word for pile of corpses is a beautiful and majestic place. Due to bad weather and snow blizzards, many people have died over the years and hence the name Rohtang. It’s located at the altitude of 3979 meters above the sea level and is 51kms away from Manali. Rohtang pass lies on the highway to Leh/Keylong although it’s closed during the winter but remains open from June to October. It connects Kullu valley directly with the Lahaul and Spiti valleys, with the tall Pir Panjals never leaving the sight offering the view of glaciers and the Chandra River which flows down from Lahaul valley.

Major attractions: To ram up the surging excitement in you, thrilling activities like skiing, mountain biking, snow scooter and many others are also offered. Rahala, the waterfall 16kms from Manali thunders down from the altitude of 2500 meters looking unbelievable and breathtaking.

How to reach:

  • Flight- catch a plane from IGI Delhi to Bhuntar Airport, you can hire a taxi from there to Rohtang Pass which is 104 kms away.
  • Train- catch a train to Jogindernagar from Delhi and drive to Rohtang La 103 kms away.

Why to visit this place: it’s only from June to October that Rohtang La is open for visitors it’s a fatal trip to make for the rest of the months.

23. Agra, Uttar Pradesh

26. Jaipur, Rajasthan
